1976 Ford XC GT 351 Ute

You've seen it on Curbside Classic, you've seen it on Hooniverse, and now you can see it here. Uniquely Australian, Utes are car-based pickups, similar to our own pickup cars. This particular one is based on the XC Falcon, and has been made in to a sort of GT 351 clone (the package was never available). This car has been sitting on the Oregon coast for a while now, but hopefully its rarity (at least in the U.S.) means it will be saved.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1976 Ford Courier

The Courier was Ford's entry into the minitruck market in the 70s and 80s. It was a rebadged Mazda, though with a Ford-designed grill. The first generation shown here lasted until 1976, and the second (and final) lasted until '85. The early Couriers are becoming rare, so it was a treat to see this one, especially in such good and original condition.

 

 

 

 

1969 Chevrolet El Camino SS

The El Camino was Chevy's pickup car, introduced in 1959 to compete with the Ford Ranchero. Like the Chevelle it was based on, the 3rd generation arrived in 1968, available in the high-performance SS 396 package. For 1969, the SS had the 396 again, with 265-375 HP, depending on how hot you wanted it. It's surprising--though awesome--to see a SS still on the job. This one's bed is filled with doors from a '60s Chevy Greenbrier van.

 

 

 

 

1970 Datsun 521 Pickup

The 521 was an updated 520, Datsun's basic pickup, and predecessor to the popular 620 and 720. Introduced in 1966, the truck had the same front end as the 411 sedan, which was redesigned in 1970, the same year the 520 became the 521. This early 521 is a little worse for wear in the front, but has no rust and appears to be completely functional and drivable.

 

1962 International Scout 80 Pickup

The Scout first appeared in 1960, six years before the Ford Bronco and 7 before the Chevy K/5 Blazer. By the late sixties, these three were big competitors in the SUV market. The Scout 80 was the first generation, and was available as the basic SUV or the small pickup shown here. It's unclear if this is an original pickup, as the green front of the bed seems non-original.

 

 

 

 

1979 Dodge L'il Red Express Truck

The L'il Red Express was special muscle-truck edition of Dodge's Adventurer 150. Produced in 1978 and '79 only, the truck's 360 V8 meant it was the fastest American car in 1978. The package added big chrome wheels, stacks, lots of wood, and gold pinstriping and signs on the doors. With only 5,118 made, the '79 truck is a rare sight today, but most that survive are in good shape, like the one here.

 

 

 

1975 Jeep J10

In 1962 Jeep entered the civilian pickup truck business with the Gladiator, putting the tough and well known Jeep name on a slightly more luxurious and accommodating pickup. More luxurious than earlier pickups based on the Willys station wagon, and the classic Jeep, but still extremely basic compared to pickups today. The Gladiator adopted the front from the Wagoneer in 1970 and continued to have that design until the pickup was retired in 1988. This J10 demonstrates the numerical names that started in 1971, as well as a cool color and great patina. It was offered for sale at $3000 OBO.
